Social Exclusion, Equity & Deprivation

John Whitelegg carried out a project for the social exclusion unit based in the Cabinet Office (UK) to identify the ways in which transport policy can deliver better life opportunities and access to disadvantaged groups and areas.  We offer a full range of services including:

  • Evaluation of current transport policies and programmes on social exclusion and deprivation
  • Social distribution of current transport expenditures (e.g. 30% of transport expenditures from public funds benefit the wealthiest 10% of the population)
  • Converting regressive expenditures and policies into progressive policies
  • Designing transport policies that can assist low income and disadvantaged groups as opposed to assisting wealthy long distance car and rail commuters
  • Using transport policies to improve health in low-income communities (including obesity, respiratory health, cardiac health and road safety)
